From our lodge, Chobe Bush Camp, the drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes, but it’s wise to allow up to 2 hours. Crossing into Zimbabwe requires a visa processed manually at the border, and delays are common, especially when several tourist buses arrive at the same time. Planning ahead ensures a relaxed and enjoyable day trip.

During the dry season, animals naturally gather around the waterholes in Chobe, making wildlife viewing both easier and more spectacular. The sunny, dry climate and pleasant temperatures also make safaris more comfortable and enjoyable.

At Victoria Falls, the water flow is at its peak in May and June, creating a breathtaking display. Later in the season, the flow decreases, offering clearer views and unobstructed panoramas, allowing you to fully appreciate one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural wonders.

Recommendations

We traveled in August after a stay in Namibia, and found that two nights in Chobe National Park and one night at Victoria Falls are more than enough to fully experience both destinations.

We hadn’t booked the helicopter tour in advance, but there are several providers on site. I recommend arranging it directly with them, giving you the chance to negotiate the price and avoid intermediaries, including through your hotel. A helicopter ride over Victoria Falls is an unforgettable experience and well worth planning into your trip.

On this visit, we didn’t rent a car. Instead, a driver took us to the Zimbabwe border, where another driver-guide was waiting to take us to the falls. Alternatively, you can rent a car at Kasane Airport in Botswana, but be sure in advance that you’re allowed to cross the border with the vehicle.

Combining a Chobe safari with a visit to Victoria Falls, whether by guided transport or self-drive, ensures a seamless, unforgettable African adventure filled with breathtaking wildlife and iconic natural wonders.
